53 IOWA INTERSTATE RAILROAD

Iowa Interstate—abbreviated IAIS—is a successful regional railroad created from the ashes of the old Rock Island. Not only has IAIS flourished in the modern era, it has retained independence from other major carriers. This is in contrast with most 1980s Midwest regional spin-offs, many of which were later reabsorbed into the Class 1 network.

IAIS was formed in 1984 by three former Rock Island men and designed to provide service on 489 miles of former Rock Island main line east from Council Bluffs, Iowa, via Rock Island, Illinois, to Blue Island in the Chicago suburbs. In addition, it has branches from Bureau to Peoria, Illinois; Altoona to Pella, Iowa; and Rock Island to Milan, Illinois. To reach the Chicago area it uses trackage rights on the former Rock Island between Bureau and Joliet (maintained by CSX) and Joliet and Blue Island (maintained by Chicago Metra).
